The sun sits lower in the sky, which means we get that dreamy, golden glow without the harsh shadows summer loves to throw at us. And it lasts longer! We're not racing against a 7pm sunset anymore. This gives us time to actually enjoy the session instead of sprinting through poses.

I could spend hours putting together studio sets with the perfect color combinations, or we could just... walk outside in October. The colors nature gives us in fall are unmatched. Deep burgundy, burnt orange, golden yellow, rich brown. Everything just works together.

Summer sessions? Everyone's sweating in their nice outfits within five minutes. Winter? We're layering and bundling and hoping nobody's face is too red from the cold. But fall? Fall is the Goldilocks of seasons.
Layers look intentional instead of necessary. Cozy sweaters, boots, scarves - these aren't just warm, they photograph beautifully. And you don't have to worry about your toddler overheating in that adorable outfit you picked out.
I always tell my clients to think in textures for fall. Chunky knits, denim, leather boots. These add visual interest to photos without trying too hard.

Let's be real - if you have kids, they're going to find the biggest pile of leaves and jump in it. They're going to pick up acorns and sticks and probably try to climb something. And you know what? Perfect.
Some of my favorite fall images are the unplanned ones. The toddler throwing leaves in the air. The couple laughing because their kid just face-planted into a pile of crunchy leaves. Dad's exasperated but smiling face when his daughter hands him her 47th "pretty leaf" to hold.

Here's my expert tip - don't wait until the week before Thanksgiving to book your fall session. I know, I know, you want peak color. But here's what actually happens: everyone wants peak color, which means I'm booked solid, the popular locations are crowded, and if the weather doesn't cooperate, we're out of luck on reschedules.
The best fall sessions happen in early to mid-October. The colors are gorgeous, the weather is still comfortable, and we have flexibility if we need to move things around.
Plus, if you book early fall, you have your images back in time for holiday cards without the stress.
Where We'll Shoot
I have a few favorite fall locations that I come back to year after year, and I'm always scouting new spots too. I love finding places with variety - open fields for that soft, glowy light, tree-lined paths for depth and color, and maybe some rustic elements like old fences or bridges.
For families with multiple kids or little ones who need space to move, I look for locations where they can explore safely while we capture those natural moments. Nobody wants to spend the whole session saying "don't go near the road!"
